The 11+ (Eleven Plus) exam is taken by students in Year 6 (aged 10–11) who are seeking admission into grammar schools and selective independent schools for Year 7 entry. The test typically assesses:

English – Reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary

Mathematics – Arithmetic, problem-solving, and algebra

Verbal Reasoning – Logical thinking and language-based reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning – Pattern recognition, spatial awareness, and problem-solving

The 11+ is highly competitive, with thousands of students applying for limited places. The exam format varies between different regions and school consortia, with the two main boards being:

GL Assessment – More structured and curriculum-based questions

CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) – More unpredictable, focusing on problem-solving and thinking skills

Some schools may also include creative writing or additional subject tests.
