Core Components
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
Focuses on critical thinking and the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge.
Assessment includes an oral presentation and a 1,600-word essay.
Extended Essay (EE)
A 4,000-word research paper on a topic of the student’s choice, related to one of the DP subjects.
Develops skills in independent research and academic writing.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Students engage in a range of activities alongside their academic studies.
Creativity: Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Activity: Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Service: Unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.
Students must document their experiences and reflections.
Subject Groups
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
Usually the student’s native language.
Courses include Language A: Literature, Language A: Language and Literature, and Literature and Performance.
Focuses on literary analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Group 2: Language Acquisition
Additional language learning.
Courses include Language B (for students with previous experience in the language), Language ab initio (for beginners), and Classical Languages.
Emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Group 3: Individuals and Societies
Subjects include History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Global Politics, and Business Management.
Develops an understanding of the complex nature of societies and human behavior.
Group 4: Sciences
Subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Design Technology, and Environmental Systems and Societies (interdisciplinary with Group 3).
Focuses on scientific inquiry, data analysis, and the application of scientific knowledge.
Group 5: Mathematics
Courses include Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
Designed to cater to different levels of mathematical ability and interest.
Emphasizes problem-solving, modeling, and the use of technology.
Group 6: The Arts
Subjects include Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Dance, and Film.
Encourages creativity and critical thinking through practical and theoretical components.
